Signalling the upcoming release of her third EP, which follows the impressive works In Defense of My Muse (2015) and Something More Holy (2016), the songwriter, singer and producer Morly’s new single ‘Sleeping In My Own Bed’ marks a notable shift in her sound. When the artist first departed from academia back in 2013 to pursue music, she was led into the word of computer-based minimalism, but four years on Katy Morley has sought out a more tactile approach to songwriting inspired by her favourite artists Nina Simone, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. This desire to create something to “exist in human hands” came to fruition when Morly headed into the studio with friend and musical counterpart Christopher Stacey in her new home of Los Angeles to create something delicate and powerful. Speaking on ‘Sleeping In My Own Bed’, Morly shares: “Lyrically I love how much it can say with such a simple thought. How it can twist to feel both lonely and empowered. It’s something I needed to hear.” This token of earnest songwriting and a continued love affair with minimalism will feature on Morly’s third EP of the same name, due via Cascine on August 25th. - HT
